How do you make Gluten-Free Air Fryer Fried Green Tomatoes?

This is a simple switch of breadcrumbs and flour.  If you need it to be gluten-free, use the gluten-free breadcrumbs.

When choosing gluten-free breadcrumbs, we typically use traditional breadcrumbs, but you can use gluten-free panko breadcrumbs as well. Either will work for this recipe.

Use gluten-free all-purpose flour, it’s best to use a high-quality flour that is a 1:1 or measure-for-measure flour with traditional flour. I use King Arthur Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour.

What type of spray or oil should you use for Air Fryer Fried Green Tomatoes?

Even though you are using an air fryer, it’s still going to need a little bit of oil, but I mean a little bit, not tablespoons of it.  I find that Grapeseed Oil Spray is the best option for the air fryer.  I use it for everything, just a nice even coat gives it that crispy coating that you are used to when traditionally frying food.

Olive Oil Spray will work as well; however, keep in mind that Grapeseed Oil Spray has a higher smoke point, so it’s the optimal choice for an air fryer.

Can you use foil in an air fryer?

Yes!  I prefer to use foil because it makes the basket much easier to clean.  The key thing here is that it needs to not cover the entire basket, so roll it up on the sides to allow air to continue to circulate.

For the air fryer to work, the air has to circulate, so the foil cannot cover the entire basket.

Along with this, it’s important to always have food weighing it down, so do not place foil in without having food on top of it, this keeps it from blowing into the heating element.

Out of Buttermilk?  I have a tip for that!

All you need are simple ingredients, many of which you likely have on hand too!  If you do not have buttermilk, a simple trick is to replace the buttermilk with a touch of white vinegar and regular milk.  It works just the same.

Quick Tips for Air Fried Green Tomatoes:

  • Do not overcrowd the basket; work in batches if needed.
  • Use firm tomatoes, if you use tomatoes that are too soft, they will get mushy.
  • If you want them extra crispy, dredge them in the flour and cornmeal twice.
  • Reheat using the air fryer to restore crispness.

How to store leftovers?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. When ready to reheat, heat in the air fryer for 3-4 minutes at 330 degrees F. Use grapeseed oil spray to restore the crispness.

These are best served with Ranch Dressing. If you are looking for another recipe that uses only yellow cornmeal, check out these traditional fried green tomatoes.
