Masala Soda

Masala soda is a delicious Indian drink that is fizzy, tangy, spicy, and sweet. 

This refreshing drink is a favourite of both locals and tourists.

You will find carts selling masala soda on street corners especially during hot summer months. 

It is super refreshing and tasty.  

It is one of the favourite drinks in my home. Gets ready in under 5 minutes.

Ingredients

Club Soda: Club soda gives it a unique fizz. You can use sparkling water as well.

Spices: Chaat masala, pepper and paprika are the spices used here.

Lemon juice: You need lemon juice for the lemonade

Black salt: Black salt has a unique tasty flavour that is perfect in chaats or Indian drinks

Sugar syrup: I have used sugar here. You can use any sweetener of choice.

Garnish: Ice cubes and mint leaves are used for garnish.

Ingredients for making masala soda: sugar, lemon juice, black salt, pepper, chaat masala, mint leaves and club soda.

Variations and Substitutions

Alternative Sweeteners: You can replace the sugar syrup with honey, maple syrup, brown sugar or agave nectar as per your choice.

Adding Fruits: Consider adding muddled fruits like strawberries or blueberries for a fruity twist to your masala soda.

Spices: Can’t find chaat masala? You can substitute it with these chaat masala substitutes.

No Soda: If you’re not a fan of carbonated drinks, you can replace the club soda with chilled water for a still version of this refreshing drink.

You can also use coke (the cold drink) in place of club soda. Do not add sugar syrup in this case. Just add lemon juice and spices.

Serving Suggestions

Masala soda is often served as a palate cleanser between meals due to its tangy and refreshing properties. 

It is also the perfect accompaniment for spicy Indian street food like samosas, pani puri, and chaats.

It is great as a thirst quencher on a hot summer day or as a tasty drink at your BBQ party.

Instructions

First take sugar and add to water to prepare the sugar syrup. 

I normally just stir the sugar and water together till the sugar dissolves.

Then keep it aside.

This recipe makes 3 glasses of 250 ml. Each.

You can double or reduce the recipe too.

In a bowl take the sugar syrup. 

Add lemon juice, black salt, chaat masala, pepper and paprika.

Give it a stir.

To serve, Take a glass.

Add ice cubes and about 3 tbsp. of the masala soda mix that you have made.

Top up with club soda or sparkling water. 

Mix it well. Garnish with mint leaves and serve immediately.

Your delicious masala soda is ready to drink.

Serving Temperature: Serve masala soda super cold. The chill factor amplifies the refreshment and the flavours.

Can make large batch: This is a very easy drink to make in large batches. 

Prepare masala soda mix and keep aside. Add club soda only when serving.

Storage: Once club soda is added, you cannot store the drink as it will be flat soon..

If you wish to store, then prepare the mix without soda and you can store it for 2-3 days in the fridge.

You can make the masala soda mix in advance. Club soda can only be added at the time of serving.

Masala soda contains refined sugar. Hence be cautious of the quantities consumed.
